On the way, during a fierce snowstorm, he encounters an unfamiliar Cossack- Emelyan Pugachyov. Unaware of his identity, Grinyov, moved by pity and in the simplicity of his heart, shares his hare-skin coat with him. Arriving at the fortress, Pyotr falls in love with the commandant's daughter, Masha. His feelings are mutual. However, Petya has a rival-Aleksey Shvabrin, a second lieutenant demoted and exiled to Belogorsk for a duel. Out of jealousy, Shvabrin does everything in his power to harm Grinyov. Meanwhile, Pugachyov declares himself Emperor Pyotr III, miraculously saved from death, and gathers a motley army. Pugachyov's rebellion rapidly gains momentum, and the rebels take one fortress after another. The capture of the Belogorsk fortress by Pugachyov's army changes the fates of Grinyov and Masha. Ahead lies a choice: honor or life, a bitter coming of age, and sacrifices for love.
