Yet the memory of this landscape continues to live in the villages scattered across its surrounding hills. Giygasuk is a documentary born from extensive fieldwork conducted in all 60 villages of Safranbolu. The film explores a layered cultural landscape that stretches from prehistoric traces and early Turkish settlements to architectural heritage, shrines, local beliefs, and oral histories. Through scenes of fading agricultural and pastoral traditions, the natural landscapes of the villages, and celebrations such as religious holidays, Hidirellez gatherings, and traditional weddings, the rhythm of rural life unfolds before the viewer. Stories of remarkable individuals from these villages and memories of a time when Turks and non-Muslims lived side by side also shape the narrative. In the local dialect, Giygasuk means "slightly ajar." Like a door left partially open, the film offers a glimpse into a world preserved in the memory of Safranbolu's villages.
