How East German forced laborers suffered for Western companies. They were forced to sew pantyhose and bed linens, manufacture furniture and car parts, working at breakneck speed. They also toiled under catastrophic conditions in coal mines and the chemical and steel industries. Political prisoners in East Germany were forced into hard, dangerous labor. Exploitation was systemic - anyone who resisted was severely punished. Many products from the prisons were exported, ironically to the class enemy. Around 6,000 West German companies exploited East Germany as a source of low wages. Prison goods from the East thus ended up on the bargain bins in the West.
