That was the question that came to shape the life and music of composer Viktor Ullmann to a great extent. In September 1942, Ullmann was deported from Prague to the Nazi ghetto and concentration camp Theresienstadt, where his career as a composer, against all external odds, reached a peak. Ullmann lived and worked in the conviction that man could overcome barbarism through his culture, but on October 18, 1944, he was murdered in the Auschwitz gas chamber. In this film, about Viktor Ullmann's deeds and fate, freelance filmmakers Peter Berggren and Göran Rosenberg pose the eternal question of the power of music and culture to the forefront.
