'Kelly's Apartment' came about when writer-directors Kate and Suzanne combined their short stories; Suzanne's about growing up in the shadows of the Prison for Women in Portsmouth Village in Kingston, Canada and Kate's about her experience, coming of age as a queer Gen Z woman. When the P4W is in your backyard what emerges is not just stories of the incarcerated women but also their families, partners and the community including broader issues of social justice, anguish and forgiveness. And when you are dating guys but are 'seen' for the first time by a young woman and fall instantly in love what emerges is a Gen Z coming of age story. In Kelly's Apartment, these stories, enhanced by an original soundtrack (including 3 songs written for the film) merge in a modern ride of young love with a nostalgic, bittersweet closure of enduring love.
