Tom Read Wilson is serving up Maharajah-worthy Indian food. Mouth-watering mains, sumptuous side dishes, classic condiments and, of course, naan breads, are all put to the test. The diners taste everything from prawn bhuna to onion bhajis, mango chutney to black dal in their search for the very best Indian food from British supermarkets. The diners know their curries: in the restaurant this time are a Bollywood dance troupe, sisters who love spice, friends who've been meeting for a curry every week for 45 years, a globe-trotting mother and daughter, curry-loving tradesmen and a couple who adore cooking Indian food. Their opinions are as strong as the flavours, with budget, mid-market and premium supermarkets all doing well. And when a Bollywood dancer says, 'It tasted the most authentically Indian to me. It tasted like a black dal I've had before... my mum's made.' You know it's going to be good. In the kitchen, super-chef Mike Reid whips up his own onion bhajis, hunts spices in the mango chutneys, reveals the supermarket secret of a creamy dal and demonstrates his chef's trick for buttery, smoky naan bread.
