This self-help group was created with the support of Dr. Hiram Johnson and volunteer Elizabeth Schermerhorn. By 1955, a social worker named John Beard arrived at Fountain House, bringing with him unconventional ideas that would soon shape the course of history for Fountain House and people living with SMI. Beard - who became executive director in the critical early years of Fountain House - emphasized the development of mutually supportive relationships among members and staff, in the context of carrying out meaningful everyday tasks.
