She numbs herself with a mysterious drug called ÆTHER, keeping reality at an arm's length. She drifts through life until her narcissistic roommate, Ariel, throws a party and she meets Cassia-a wildfire in human form. Bright, magnetic, untouchable, ethereal. Cassia is everything Eden isn't, and for a moment, their love feels like salvation. Eden convinces Cassia to start taking ÆTHER together, and they share a fiery passion in a world where the lines between reality and fiction are blurred. But love built on escape is never safe. After Cassia starts to take higher and higher doses, Eden watches Cassia spiral into someone else and she starts to realize she's not just ruining herself anymore. Past and present collapse into each other, paranoia bleeds into hallucination, and Eden is forced to confront a horrifying truth: you can't run from your ghosts forever.
