In the struggle, Bárbara kills Smiley, and Rose discovers the body later. Trying to keep up appearances, Bárbara continues working as a double agent for the British and the Germans. The body of a supposed British commander in uniform washes ashore in Portugal, carrying a briefcase with sensitive documents regarding British plans. Rose and Larenz try to verify whether all the information provided by Ema is true, as well as the authenticity of the commander's information. Rose grows increasingly suspicious of Ema and Martha, and questions the war's outcome for the German side, given the rising number of casualties (Smiley, Carol) and the recent German losses in North Africa. Miss Black and Martha finally reveal their connection to Ema, who admits to being a double agent for the Allies (she is known as Morphy to the British, and Meister to the Germans). Larenz breaks into Ema's room and finds nothing incriminating; Rose demands that Bárbara bring her concrete information from the English. Larenz and Rose are alerted to the passage through Portugal of actor Leslie Howard, as well as Roosevelt and Churchill. Eventually, Martha provides information about that flight, which culminates in the plane being shot down. Bárbara puts increasing pressure on Rose and Miss Black to find out the whereabouts of her brother Augusto. Miss Black pulls strings with the PVDE and Agostinho Lourenço and eventually discovers that Augusto fell ill and died some time earlier. Bárbara is devastated by the news and tells Black that she no longer wants to continue, but Miss Black threatens her, given her importance to the operation. Bárbara devises a plan to escape with Joseph. The immigrant passage operations led by Américo and Joseph come to an abrupt halt, leaving Américo helpless. See less
