In the same room that, three decades earlier, had hosted the Paulistana Vanguard generation-featuring artists like Itamar Assumpção and Arrigo Barnabé-a new wave of independent musicians found a space to showcase their work. From August to December, the festival Som em 4 Tempos took over Funarte with performances by emerging artists such as Curumin, Céu, Metá Metá, and Bixiga 70, as well as veterans like Tetê Espíndola and Arrigo himself, performing with the band O Neurótico e as Histéricas. The event also featured discussions about the independent music scene. Interweaving excerpts from concerts, debates, and interviews with the artists, A Space in the Center is a musical record of the festival, but also a reflection on the forms and resilience of independent music-then and now.
