It turns out that she had been exposed to chemical weapons, even though she had no prior knowledge of her exposure and it was entirely absent from her medical records. The doctor tells her that if she decides to abort, she will become infertile. She therefore has to choose between giving birth to a child who is likely to be severely handicapped or aborting the baby and giving up hope of ever having a child.
