He dare not mention to Ida that he has had a few glasses with Nergårds-Anna, but instead brings Johan Klang and his new fiancee Lena home. As they have a few drinks at the table, Ida goes up to the attic to get something to treat them to, but while she's up there, she gives birth to her ninth child, which, like all the others, is a boy. As the harvest comes around, the Rask family can look forward to well-filled coffers for the winter. However, it's worse for Johan. As he comes across some of the youths of the village, he finds them dancing by a fork in the road. He bids them home, to dance at his croft, but he is drunk and is not at his senses. This shows even worse at home, where he makes his fiancee dance for him and when she can't anymore, he beats her with his cane. Luckily, Gustav comes by his home and stops the abuse, making him swear never to do it again. However, a couple of months later, Johan finds his wife in the attic, where she has hanged herself, because he wouldn't stop the abuse. After the funeral, her ghost haunts him, so he begs Gustav and Ida to let him sleep at their place. The next morning he is gone, never to be found again. Meanwhile, the Rask family's second eldest son, Axel, starts going out with Oskar Olsson's daughter Ingrid - something they have to hide, because neither of their fathers would approve of it.
