You know the unconventional Christmas movie, the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon of the holiday season that keep you sane when surrounded by Elf and A Christmas Story. In this special Christmas episode, we will discuss 1941, the underrated 1979 classic film from director Steven Spielberg, and written by Back to the Future cohorts Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale. The movie was made as a loud and boisterous WWII comedy in the vein of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World with an epic cast ranging from the golden era, Hollywood veterans such as Robert Stack, to young rising stars of the 70s including SNL alumni Dan Akroyd and John Belushi. Though the film was a modest success, it is considered to be the Director's first commercial disappointment. The film has gained a cult following, albeit a quiet one. One would be hard-pressed to find a special Christmas showing of this film at their nearest art house. We talk about what we love about this film. We will lament how it has not (yet) taken its place among the other well-known Christmas films, and what we can do to change this.
