A combination of clearing and the unique system of paeleo channels beneath the Western Australian wheat belt have resulted in 8 per cent of arable land there going saline. Ironically, the State with the most experience at tackling the problem and the biggest immediate need of help, is the only one in Australia yet to secure any of the Federal Government's $700 million under the National Action Plan for Salinity.
