Bodies of children suffering from thalassemia do not produce enough blood and they have to rely on blood transfusion throughout their lives. Thalassemia can manifest itself as a disease in an unborn child if both the parents carry this trait. A blood test can detect carriers who have to exercise caution in partner selection and planning a child. Thalassemia is spread across continents, primarily in communities of Asian and Mediterranean origin.
