And Will and Merriman are between times, in a smithy, where John Wayland Smith is preparing to join the Signs. They came here after laying Hawkin to rest in his own time, and here in the courtyard are gathered all the Old Ones from across the centuries who Will has encountered on his quest. From among the throng a procession of children carry a litter woven of branches and reeds on which lies the body of the Lady. They place it on the ground, and she rises, and greets Will. Congratulates him on completing his task. Then on his great anvil, John Smith joins the Signs with rings of gold, and Will is given it to wear, for the future, in case the Dark comes rising again. And the Old Ones bid Will farewell, and he is full of anguish as he finds himself returning to his own time. Will and Merriman are in the grounds of the Manor, and they begin to walk down the lane to his house. Will's family turn out to meet him. None of them know what happened. Mary has forgotten her ordeal, and they are full of stories about geese in the night making a dreadful racket. They think Will stayed at Miss Greythorne's last night, and are very grateful to Merriman for walking him home. Merriman bids them farewell, and Will watches him walk up the hillside, through a pair of carved oak doors that swing slowly together, and silently shut. See less
