Her brother Changlin refused to serve as cannon fodder for the Kuomintang and fled to the Niutoushan base where the guerrilla forces were stationed. Baozhang couldn't catch Changlin and cruelly kicked Fengying's mother to death. The abbot of Dabei Nunnery, Wu Yuan, used the excuse that Fengying's family owed rent to the land in the Nunnery and forcibly took Fengying into the Nunnery as a nun. Fengying worked all day long and lived a life inferior to that of cattle and horses. Regardless of carrying water or chopping wood, Fengying always passed by a small wooden bridge in the mountains, where she falls in love with the young stonemason Zhao Bingxiang. Bingxiang led the workers to look for the unpaid wages from the district chief, but was assassinated by the district chief.
