The scene shifts to the cabin of an old prospector. The old man is out of his mind. He goes forth and by some feat of intuition finds the bag of nuggets-and dies. A friendly Indian carries him to his cabin, and, returning, is about to pick up the bag of nuggets when the thief arrives. There is a quarrel but the two agree to divide the spoils. While the division is taking place, the thief strikes the Indian on the head and escapes, making a dangerous passage across a morass of quicksands, which finally begins to envelope him. The Indian comes to his senses, traces the thief who offers the bag of nuggets to save him from the sands. The Indian lets himself down and begins to sink. Three days elapse. The thief dies. A tree falls from the bank and the Indian rescues himself and takes the bag of nuggets to a woman who befriended him and dies at her feet. Written by
