Leaving the house with a bundle of old clothes, which are to provide the money for the ticket, he tells his wife that if he returns in a cab it will be a signal that he has won the lottery, and she may set about breaking up the furniture by way of celebrating the occasion. Tontolini sells the clothes and buys the ticket, but, attempting to intervene in a street fight, he is set upon by both combatants and so severely mauled that he cannot walk. A couple of onlookers hail a cab and carry the unfortunate hero home in it. Mrs. Tontolini sees the cab, and, remembering Tontolini's instructions, thinks he has won the lottery, and sets about smashing the furniture. When she hears the real cause of her hubby's stylish return he finds himself the center of a disturbance far worse than that which has been the cause of all the trouble.
