In spite of his lack of success, he is the patron saint of the other roomers because of his kindness. When his great invention is completed, he finds that "red tape" keeps him from giving it to humanity. Desperate at last, he surprises the successful man who has refused him admittance to his office in his own home, locks him, gagged and bound, in his garret, and goes forth, in the successful man's clothes. Success comes to the successful, so the failure finds that in the guise of a successful man he is accepted, and his invention is acclaimed to the world. But with wealth and fame lying at his feet, "The Failure" sends his money to his old friends at the boarding house, releases the successful man from the garret, takes off his wig and false whiskers which have given him the appearance of success, and goes out again into the world, asking that his invention be accredited only to "A Failure."
