It features interviews with architects Mario Bellini and Rudy Ricciotti, the department's director, Sophie Makariou, and other specialists, including epigraphers, conservators, and researchers. Instead of the traditional, tall, Western glass roof enclosing a courtyard to gain space, the winners of the 2003 architectural competition sought to create a distinct space that incorporates certain fundamental principles of Eastern architecture. This resulted in the "flying carpet veil" of glass and gilded mesh, which emphasizes transparency and allows natural light to illuminate the collections. These collections are arranged to highlight the breadth of civilization and the diversity of peoples associated with Islam, and to showcase both the art of building and the furnishings. In this sense, the film connects certain pieces with the places they evoke and their cultural context. An openwork jali with floral decoration transports us to Agra in India, the sculpted porch of an emir takes us to Cairo, azure faience tiles refer to the architecture of Sinan in Istanbul, and Quranic inscriptions to the Great Mosque of Cordoba.
