He rears her lovingly and when she grows into her teens Jim quietly, silently loves her. But one day the big tower bell proclaims that the angry sea has wrecked a vessel, and Jim, with the rest of the fisher folk, goes out to the rescue. One of the men they save is none other than Frank, Jim's good pal of other days. Needless to say, he makes his more with Jim and his ward. He never suspects that Jim loves Dollie and soon his days and nights are restless because of the big brown eyes that look on him. And Dollie loves him, too. Suddenly Frank comes on Jim as he is fondling the little frock Dollie wore the day she was snatched from a watery grave, and the great truth dawns upon him. He decides that he is in the way, and leaves the house to go Heaven-knows-where. And Jim only discovers it when he finds Dollie weeping over the note Frank left. Noble Jim goes out, and overtakes Frank. He orders him to go back; Frank refuses, and begs Jim to let him go. Jim argues that Dollie loves him, and he must go back; Frank is obstinate, and Jim finally fells him. Old pal Frank realizes the great sacrifice Jim is making, gives in, and soon he and Dollie are clasped in a lovers' embrace. And out on the rocks, alone, Jim holds to his heart the little dress that reminds him of the sunshine that the deep sea brought to him, only to sacrifice it on the altar of a greater love.
