It took the form of an in-depth interview with a leading political figure, interviewed by journalists Jean-Pierre Elkabbach and Alain Duhamel in a direct, analytical, and often incisive style. The program lasted approximately one hour and, over time, became a central feature of televised political life, particularly during election campaigns. Launched in 1977, it quickly attracted the main figures of the French political scene: Raymond Barre, then Prime Minister, Georges Marchais, Jacques Chirac, François Mitterrand, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, and Michel Rocard, among others. Beyond French leaders, "Cartes sur table" also welcomed several foreign leaders, which reinforced its image as a major political platform. The principle is to "lay all cards on the table": journalists repeatedly ask precise questions, seeking clarification on programs, contradictions, or past decisions, in a straightforward, face-to-face format. Between 1977 and 1981, the program played a particularly important role during elections.
