His older brother, Jim, is a plainclothes detective. Ned has difficulty in finding a job but finally does so as a jewelry salesman. He does not know that he is working for a gang of crooks. Jerry Bennett, brother of Jim's sweetheart, is one of the gang, and believing that Jim is on him, reports to the gang who formulate a plan to get Jim discharged from the police force. He does not want to be a drag on Ned and leaves home. This throws the full load of supporting the family on Ned and he bravely assumes it. he discovers the true nature of his job, but fearing his inability to secure another position and care for his mother, keeps on with the gang. Jim finds a clue which leads him to Jerry whom he accuses of being one of the gang. Florence stoutly defends her brother and breaks her engagement with Jim, He is unable to accomplish anything without authority and appeals to the Chief of Police. He is told that if he runs down the gang he will be reinstated. The present leader of the gang is deposed and Ned elected to succeed him. The deposed leader, Kahn, hoping to be revenged, tells the police and they prepare to raid the place. Jim locates the headquarters of the gang and discovers that his brother, Ned, is their leader. He thinks his duty is to turn Ned over to the police but is convinced Ned's motives were right, and they determine to leave and start all over again. The police raid the place before they can get away, and Jim, realizing that if Ned is taken as a crook, it will break his mother's heart, takes Ned's place and is arrested.
