This appeals to her romantic enthusiasm and she discovers "The Egg," a character who is a mystery to the habitues of a crook saloon. She starts to reform him with many discouraging results. Finally she attempts to show him a better existence and gets him attired in evening clothes and has him as a guest at a dinner party in her home. His antics embarrass her, and when she denounces him he picks up the hook, turns to the title page and writes across it, "Compliments of the author," hugely enjoying his joke on her.
