Shortly after their ...See moreWhile working his way through college, George Reynolds meets Edith Pond. Their acquaintance ripens into love. At the end of his college days, George returns home, with a promise from Edith that she will marry him. Shortly after their parting, Edith's father is taken suddenly sick and on his death-bed, he implores Edith to marry Ralph Leslie. To please her father, she consents. She writes George, telling him of her engagement and asking him to forgive and forget her. Heartbroken, he suddenly makes up his mind to leave his home town and establish himself in a large city, where he will be forgotten and engrossed with his profession. Just after he leaves home, a telegram comes from Edith, in which she states that he has broken her engagement with Leslie and requesting George to come to her at once. His parents, not knowing where he has gone, put the telegram aside until his return, which is five years later. His father and mother have almost given him up as dead. They are overjoyed to see him again, and to learn that he is a successful and prominent lawyer in the metropolis. When his father hands him the telegram, which has been awaiting him, George loses no time in calling upon Edith.
