The "Limited" was to stop at Ridge Rock for the shipment of bullion from the mine of Jacob Kendall, but, fearing a return of the outlaws after the departure of the construction train, at the earnest solicitation of the Ridge Rock operator, Russell consented to take the bullion on his train and meet the "Limited." As Russell, who is driving the engine, turns a sharp bend, he is stopped by a young woman, who says she is Mary Kendall, daughter of Jacob Kendall. She explains that her father's "Special" is on the "Nantook" siding, from which point she had undertaken to ride in the electric handcar, which, unfortunately, had become disabled. Russell gives Mary permission to ride with him in the engine cab. While Russell is relating the details of the hold-up, the fireman calls his attention to a man standing on a pile of ties, trying to flag the train. As the train comes on, the man on the ties realizes that the engineer does not intend to stop, and jumps from the ties just before the train crashes into them. Mendosa's men now rush in and open fire on the train. The engineer is shot in the head. Fearing for the safety of Miss Kendall, he hides her in the sand box. Mendosa leaps from his horse into the cab. While he and Russell are struggling, another of the outlaws leaps from his horse into the cab and throws back the lever and stops the train, just as Mendosa delivers a heavy blow which renders Russell unconscious. The outlaws escape with the bullion. A number of the outlaws and trainmen were killed. When Russell comes to his first thoughts are for the safety of Miss Kendall. He tries to start the engine, but it will not move, for it has been disabled by the outlaws. The electric hand car is fixed. Russell instructs his fireman to get the engine in shape and takes the train to the siding. Just as Russell and Mary are about to get away on hand car, Milton, Jacob Kendall's private secretary, who has been hiding under the mattress in the bunk in the caboose, orders Russell to remain with his engine, and says that he (Milton) will take Miss Kendall to her father's car. Miss Kendall tells Milton that Mr. Russell is wounded and needs attention, so all three ride back on the hand car. Mendosa and his gang appear again as the electric car is starting, but Russell manages to get away, but not before he gets another wound. Around a curve they see the "Special" backing on the main line. Mary gives her father a graphic account of the hold-up and of Russell's fight, first, for the bullion, and later for his protection of her. Kendall takes Russell aboard his car as his guest until he recovers from his wounds. Russell tells Kendall that the sheriff has been notified and is now on his way to Nantook to run down Mendosa. Kendall goes to Nantook to give the sheriff what aid he may desire. A week later the "Special" is still at Nantook. Russell, who has recovered, and Mary have become friendly. This enrages Milton, who decides upon revenge. He tells Kendall that Russell's intentions are not good and points to Mary and Russell entering the woods. Kendall expresses regret and sends Milton after Mary. At a picturesque spot Mary and Russell pause. Mary does not resist Russell's attention. This is too much for Milton. He rushes into their presence and accuses Russell of taking advantage of Miss Kendall's sympathy and of her father's hospitality. Russell resents and Milton strikes Russell. Mary is horrified and faints when she sees Milton pull out his gun. In the struggle Russell gets Milton's gun from him. Two of Mendosa's scouts, who have been reconnoitering, see the combat from a distance, and recognizing Russell, decide to get even. One of the outlaws fires, intending to hit Russell, but in reality wounding Milton. Russell fires at the outlaws, bringing one of them down. The other, firing a last shot, attempts to escape, but Russell takes the horse of the fallen bandit and pursues his companion. The sheriff and his men find Mary and Milton lying on the ground. Milton tells the sheriff that Russell was insulting Miss Kendall, and he interfered, and that Russell then shot him and made his escape. Mr. Kendall, who has just arrived, hears the explanation, and orders the sheriff to get him. But before the sheriff can execute his orders, Russell comes riding in with the second bandit lying across his horse. He gives an account of the shooting of the bandits, and thereupon Murray informs him that he is his prisoner for the shooting of Milton. The wounded bandit clears the situation, telling them he himself shot Milton, although intending to shoot Russell. Miss Kendall then gives her version of the affair, denying that Mr. Russell was insulting her, but accusing Milton. Russell is released by the sheriff. Kendall orders Milton and the bandits taken to the car. He apologizes to Russell, and walking on ahead, leaves Russell and Mary to walk together to the "Special."
