The long expected day arrives. We see Reuben receive a telegram: "Dear Cousin, call down at 3, and we will make it pleasant for you." But Miss Van Astorbilt is called away. The servants are instructed to act for her. This does not suit the servants, as they are preparing for the yearly Housemaids' Masquerade; they resent Reuben's intrusion, but decide to obey Madame and make it pleasant for him. And they do.
