Beginning of the journey in Punta Cana: the famous resort with it big beaches, coconut trees and luxurious hotels.But Raphaël will show us that there are other interesting places in the Dominican Republic.So Raphaël travels to the island ...See moreBeginning of the journey in Punta Cana: the famous resort with it big beaches, coconut trees and luxurious hotels.But Raphaël will show us that there are other interesting places in the Dominican Republic.So Raphaël travels to the island of Saona: he meets there Marina Vauboin de Sanchez: this island is now protected (Cotubanamá National Park): there only fishermen living there.Marina and Raphaël walk through the village (the house have solar panels). drink coconut milk, dance a little merengue and then take a boat.At 400 meters from the coast there is a natural swimming pool : they go snorkeling very carefully to see starfishes and the coral reef.Then we see Raphaël traveling on a bus, a stop near a sugar cane plantation, carts pulled by oxen are bringing the sugar cane to a railway station.Then Raphaël takes a second bus and arrives at Sannto Domingo: he meets Carolina Contreras, a pleasant hairdresser called "Miss Rizos" (Miss Curly Hair) because she promotes the curly hair (she has published for her client a comic about young Dominican girls and their rights to have curly hair.Then they go to a "colmado" , a grocery where people can buy meat, cheese, fruits, vines, honey,rum,etc) or drink a beer.They visit later the Parque Colón ,with the first Catholic cathedral of America: they look at the old and restored houses (colonial architecture) and in the night they go for dancing merengue and bachata at the San Francisco monastery.On the morning they go to an artisan market (the famous Dominican dolls, wooden masks and amber jewels.They meet then Xaivier Ringer, a female muralist and help her to paint a wall showing Dominican women.Later Raphaël goes to a baseball club: there Fidel Mejina is the trainer of the women team "Las Fieras" who invites Raphaèl to play baseball.Then Raphaël travels to Cotui: there he meets Rafael Cedeno, a photographer who take pictures of the Dominican people.After the breakfast with a strong dark coffee they take motorcycle-taxis: they meet a cocoa producer with its fighting cock and later arrive at the Hatillo lake (the great artificial lake in the Antillean islands): with a boat they reach the Caves of the Golondrinas (which belongs to the Aniana Vargas National Park), they can see Taino cave paintings.Finally Raphaël meets in Las Galeras Dominico Mirabile who manages an eco lodge and take care for the iguanas ( an endangered species): they go to Playa Rincón and eat grilled lobsters. Besides we can enjoy the story of Camilo Rijo Fulcar, the musician who helps young Dominican people to learn music (for example Yeldri and Adrian Duo Callejero), the importance of the baseball for the Dominican youth (social promotion like Carlos Ariel Guzman, a professional baseball player), the "colmado" as place of meeting of the neighborhood (sometimes a dancing night or a karaoke night), the life of the fishermen at Los Cacaos (Fausto Rodriguez Reyes , the president of the fishing committee is visiting the fishermen on their duties (one captured a huge squid), the European tourists practicing sport fishing (they captured this day sea breams), the amber mines in the East of Dominican Republic (the wells, the workshop for the cutting and the buying of the amber pieces), the National Park of the Jaragua with its ranger Bienvenido Perez called Blanco who knows very well the mangrove with its pink flamingos and iguanas.
