Travelling in this part of the world is still pure adventure today. The probably most exclusive lift into the wilderness of the Kruger National Park is a rolling 5-star hotel, pulled by an old steam horse, the "Pride of Africa". After almost one and a half days of driving, lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalos - the legendary "Big Five" - lure visitors to the continent's oldest game reserve. Until almost 100 years ago, at the time of the legendary Transvaal Gold Rush, the wilderness of today's "Kruger National Park" was considered a death zone. Gold . The greed for the shimmering precious metal drove thousands of Desperados from the Indian Ocean in the east through the African bush to the Drakensberg highlands. What has remained besides countless molehills and abandoned mine shafts is only a small gold digger's nest: Pilgrim's Rest. From the "Promised Land" down to the plain of the Lowvelds a huge gorge furrows the highlands of the Escarpment. The gigantic rock masses of the Blyde River Canyon are considered the largest forested canyon labyrinth in the world. On good days the view reaches far beyond the border to Mocambique. A close-meshed fence between the two neighbouring countries still cuts the old game trails from the "Kruger" to the east. An ambitious nature conservation project - called "Peace Park" - is to clear the border posts.
