According to data from the 2016 National Health Interview Survey, 25.5 million American adults age 18 or older are living with vision loss. Of these 25.5 million American adults, 15.3 million women and 10.1 million men report experiencing significant vision loss. Impaired vision or blindness can be caused by many things including genetics, infection, disease or injury. To be legally blind means that someone has vision that measures 20/200 or worse. During the next three decades, the population of adults with vision impairment and age-related eye diseases is estimated to double because of the rapidly aging U.S. population. In addition, the epidemic of diabetes as well as other chronic diseases will contribute to an increasing population of people who experience vision loss. Life is full of challenges for anyone, and for those who are blind or have low vision, additional environmental, social, and technological challenges exist. However, many visually impaired people agree that the hardest part about being blind is getting people to move beyond their own preconceived notions and expectations of a person who is blind. Well intentioned good Samaritans don't realize how condescending they are being when they assume someone is incapable or doesn't know what they are doing or where they are going. These low expectations of limited capabilities occur in public and professional sectors. Limited vision is incorrectly considered to be a handicap by so many people that people who are blind or low vision are written off on a systemic level, wholly dismissed before they are even given a chance to demonstrate their vast skills and capabilities. Although U.S. public policy at the Federal level has shifted away from sheltered workshops that employ exclusively or primarily people with disabilities at sub-minimum wage, there is still a lot of progress to be made towards integration and inclusion in the workforce. Today, roughly 70% of blind and visually-impaired Americans are either unemployed or out of the workforce entirely. Ignorance of the abilities that people who are blind possess is a major contributing factor. Perceptions are likely to change if people can see what successful people who are blind or vision impaired look like. See less
