Having suffered at the hands of the Taliban, he has a strong sense of justice in regard to the treatment of the prisoners and wants to play by the rules despite a seemingly violent and corrupt culture that exists amongst the prison officials. As he attempts to balance his ambition in the challenging new environment with a turbulent home life - his wife was unfaithful and, following the separation, he is attempting to bury the situation under a tempestuous rebound relationship - he has to manage a violent inmate who seems to know exactly how to push Kofler's emotional buttons. But there is something that doesn't quite fit. Why does the inmate know so much about him? Why is there a mysterious blood trail in an interrogation room...? Who is the jailed woman locked down in a deserted part of the prison? On his quest to stay true to his principles, Kofler comes face to face with the truth of his situation, and uncovers the darkest of realities inside the forgotten prison.
