For her booth, Molly makes jars and jars of fish balls made from yellow pike, carp, and whitefish with some salt, pepper, water, eggs, carrots, and cracker meal. Even Sammy has gotten involved by donating a few paintings he has done (which no one buys). After the fundraiser, Mr. George Ackerson, a food distributor working for Peter Piper Supermarkets, comes by to make an offer to bring Molly's fish to the Chicago headquarters to see if it could be mass produced. After Mr. Ackerson brings a few jars of Molly's fish out to Chicago, the corporation invites Molly to fly out to meet them and to discuss the ingredients and amounts needed for mass production. In Chicago, Molly meets Mrs. Genevieve Lubitsch, who will oversee the testing procedure with Molly as the cook. The problem is Molly doesn't know exactly how much to use since she does what she has done for years using a little bit of this and a little bit of that with no written recipe. The test batches don't meet expectations, and Molly even calls Mrs. Herman at midnight to see if she knows the exact amounts for the recipe. She can't help Molly either. The company decides it doesn't want to proceed any further. Molly comes home crushed, and the family is worried that the experience has affected her emotionally for the last month. Her fish doesn't taste the way it used to taste, and even her recent chopped liver and pot roast have not been up to her old standards. She cooks up the fish recipe for dinner, and her magic touch has returned. Jake is worried that Molly, who has stated she will never eat fish again, might be interested in going out to Chicago, maybe even permanently, if the corporation would be interested in seeing her again. He wants the family not to let her know the fish is as good as ever. Since Molly is so crushed, Jake decides he must tell her the truth. Molly admits she has tasted this batch of fish, realizes it tastes like it should, and has written down the portions needed for her meal. Molly then rips up the recipe since she has realized that she cooks best where she is needed the most. Written by Robert Gold See less
