She left under her own accord without the blessing of her family as the traditional rural life-style didn't fit her fantasies of becoming a more "modern" citizen of the world. About a decade after she is forced to come back because she gets tangled up in a drug-based network and cannot finance herself anymore. Home is not what she expected, her mother has died and her father has a young helper on the farm, Matteo. Laura and the boy becomes friends and this relationship changes her view about her home.
