Filmed on location in Italy, filmmaker Robert Drew captures Menotti in rehearsal and performance with guest artists. Among them are Soviet pianist Sviatoslav Richter, British cellist Jacqueline Du Pre with pianist Richard Goode and violinist James Oliver Boswell IV; Shirley Verrett accompanied by the Choir of the Academy of St. Cecilia in Rome; and conductors Zubin Mehta and Thomas Schippers. In other highlights, pianist John Browning and three members of the Beaux Arts String Quartet perform; Judith Blegen and John Reardon -- in the title roles in Menotti's staging of the opera "Pelleas et Melisande" by Claude Debussy -- and conductor Werner Torkanowsky are shown in rehearsal with Menotti and performing on opening night.
