Martha visits Carolee at the Aldrich house and learns how Cathy tricked everyone at the hospital to kidnap Stephanie. But, Martha doesn't believe the theory that Cathy's intent was revenge. Althea wants Penny to return East to live with her when the school term is over. Penny is reticent because of John and how she was in the way during Althea's marriage to Nick. When Althea assures that things will be different now, Penny says that she doesn't want any of her old friends like Mike or Martha to know about her condition because they will pity her. Mona insists that Carolee wasn't to blame for not realizing Cathy's intent. Her kindness elicits an apology from Carolee who is sorry that she misjudged Mona before. Althea phones John to tell him that Penny is coming home with her, but there's no answer. Maggie stops by Steve's office with the evening newspaper. She wonders about the paper's statement about the police waiting for a ransom demand when Nick told her that Detective Cadman believes otherwise. Steve admits that he lied to Carolee because the idea that Cathy will never return the child would kill her. Maggie questions if a lie might make the situation worse.
