Bill ignores the job goes to Desmond's buddy, brilliant but divorce-ruined academic Owen Blyton, who seeks revenge as his materialist wife left him for Bill. Finding her fiancee is bed with another, Zoe Harding assumes she can recover in the cottage of her godmother, judge Harriet Hunt, but she rented it to Owen, who was after quiet to write, and soon regrets his gentleman offer to share it with meddlesome chatterbox Zoe, who gets a crush on him. Desmond has an affair with judge Harriet, who still convicts his dodgy firm for refuses to be seen together with the felon, who saves her from a vindictive escaped convict.
