Nick stuns a bewildered Toni with the news that Matt canceled the lithium project, and says he doesn't want her sympathy. Concerned that Nick didn't answer her when she called out to him from the nurse's station, Cathy phones Nick for reassurance that he's not angry with her. Nick tells her that their date tonight is the most important thing in the world to him. Matt puts Karen to work in obstetrics beside Steve. Karen questions Matt about his tense demeanor. Since Toni is his "real family," Billy visits her in an attempt to get her to talk to Dan about his treatment of Carolee. During their conversation, Billy mentions that Dan has been angry ever since the night that Carolee invited her over for dinner. At Nick's apartment, Cathy encourages Nick to stop playing the jolly, swinging bachelor and tell her why he was so angry earlier.
