The region used to be prosperous though thanks to coffee growing. Until 1986 at any rate, the year the prices suddenly collapsed. People then stopped cultivating it and felled the trees in order to make and sell charcoal, which led to soil erosion and the subsequent impoverishment of the local peasants.
