The monastery he joins defies church rules by building their own community to live like the ancient desert fathers. They are vulnerable to attacks from the government and nomads, who claim that the monastery is harmful to the environment. These events force the hermit to live in a group setting and eventually return to Cairo in the midst of the worst time for Christian Egyptians. Upon his return, the hermit reassesses the meaning of his monastic life and the value of community living with his brothers after a journey that spans six years and two revolutions. See less
