José Thomaz de Souza Martins (Alhandra, 7 March 1843 - Alhandra, 18 August 1897) was a portuguese doctor, pharmacist and professor. Agnostic and completely dedicated to science, Sousa Martins was a generous doctor, putting himself at the service of the most needy patients. In Lisbon, after his death (he committed suicide, at age 54, because he was tuberculous), a popular cult developed around his figure and his memory, which started to see him as a saint, mixing religion and spiritism.
