Arriving for his first day of work, John notes Carolee's cryptic reaction when she encounters Steve. John volunteers to sign a contract with Hope Memorial, indicating he has a deep sense of commitment to the hospital. Carolee reluctantly agrees that she and Steve can address one another by their first name. Steve wants to bury the past as Althea and Nick have, and he asks Carolee to consider being friends with him to make both of their lives easier. John explains to Althea that a month after he left her, his wife Jessica ran off to Paris with another man.
