As happens to most cities or even countries, Hong Kong maybe subject to governmental corruption. The city is no longer independent, with China taking away its culture and characters. Issues such as limited education space, censorship and state control, have given rise to morph the voice of the propagandist into a surrealist visual defending the city. The Somnambulist, a protagonist, is used as a symbol to represent a communist robot walking in circles unconsciously. These are the other metaphors used to illustrate the political messages: (Object - Metaphor) Closet - Repression Tie - The government's choke-hold on the truth Record's crackles - Citizen's scar and sorrow Pepper Grinder - State control by pepper spray Music Box - Hypnotise; playing along to tune of one beat Disappearance of the Chair - Limited Education Space Tin Robot - Prison Warder represent Big Brother authority Dysfunctional Television - Media censorship Projector's Visual - Projection of actuality Milk Disapearing - Infanticide; lack of formula baby milk Alarm Clock -Prison klaxon All these tie together to voice my view of Hong Kong's democracy with its characteristics and traditions and how they are being overshadowed by communist China. The monochrome surrealist visual gives a salute to German Expressionist Cinema. See less
