Quietly he purloins money and jewelry. The child awakes, and while surprised at seeing the man, is unafraid; and her little heart touched by the haggard appearance of the miscreant, she brings forth bread and wine, which the poor unfortunate, driven into wrongdoing through privation rather than desire, hungrily stows away. While he is eating and drinking the child is overcome by sleep, and, touched by her innocence and purity, the man gently lays her on the divan, kisses her, and replacing the articles he had intended stealing, exits, resolved to lead a better life.
