Now researchers claim that the theory survived in Sweden - despite scientific evidence to the contrary. And that there may be many more similar cases of false confessions. Rickard L. Sjöberg is a doctor and memory researcher at Umeå University. He claims that the idea of the possibility of awakening repressed memories is unscientific. The idea is based on the brain being able to store a memory of, for example, severe abuse in childhood, or of committed murders. But that memory then erases it from consciousness.
