But the jury acquits the villain. Furious, Oleg resigns and leaves for the Krasnodar region to join his colleague Marina Luzhskaya, with whom he had an office romance. Two months later, Oleg returns to St. Petersburg: his boss, Colonel Porey, is accused of concealing funds and suspended from his duties. This all stems from the discovery of nine million dollars in the office of the Internal Security Directorate (USB), for which Porey is responsible, whose origins are unknown. During Manturov's absence from St. Petersburg, Batetskiy, reinstated as head of the Main Directorate of Internal Affairs homicide department, has made a real splash: solving old contract killings has strengthened his standing with the police brass. Yurev, the head of the Main Directorate of Internal Affairs, also favors him, as Batetsky improves his chances of being transferred to a new position in Moscow. The only thing left to do is solve the long-ago murder of Vice Governor Stavskiy, which Batetskiy "identifies" as being ordered by Manturov's friend, the influential businessman Arkadev. Now Manturov must not only get to the bottom of the story surrounding the recovered money, but also defend his friend's honor and prevent future crimes from his sworn enemy.
