It poignantly features the history of the South and speaks to its horrific violence towards African Americans, from slavery to the present. American folk art specialists, local artists and museum goers comment her her art. Gwendolyn Magee passed away at 67, on April 27, 2011, just a few days after filming. She was working on a quilt dedicated to the 1961 Freedom Riders, a work in progress she advanced with much energy, despite her ailing condition.
