He is brave and handsome but becomes a little ridiculous by making his mistake. The king's original French title for the play was "Le Qui pro Quo". A qui-pro-quo, a confusion of persons. A who-for-whom, a "one for the other", is one of the theatrical tricks that was already used in ancient Rome. One person is allowed to be considered or considered to be another and this creates confusions that are funny. King Gustav III has, in a way that was natural to him, expressed the young hero's predicament of being at once a man of honor and a little ridiculous: he is admittedly a nobleman, a newly ennobled, not a born nobleman.
