A music student in Vienna, the war brought his studies to an abrupt end when teachers in his school turned him over to the Nazis. Steiner escaped death in Auschwitz because of his talent as a musician. Fleeing first to Shanghai and then to Montreal, Canada, he ended up at McGill University teaching at the Music Department.
