Bouncing between temporary homes, enduring prison-like institutional placements, and aging out of foster care with no one to turn to, they are now turning their pain and anger into purpose by fighting for the future of other impacted youth. Coming largely from communities disproportionately impacted by foster care, especially Black, Native American, and LGBTQIA+2S (Two Spirit) youth, these determined advocates, long silenced by these systems, are demanding that no child endure the trauma they did. That no child face a future more likely involving prison or homelessness than graduating from college. As they see it, the only way to change these systems is for the ones who lived through these problems to be at the center of fixing them. Testifying in state legislative chambers, speaking out on Capitol Hill, and designing new community programs, these young leaders are calling out injustices and driving home their shared vision for all youth in foster care to feel safe, connected, and have a chance to thrive. The story follows these up-and-coming community organizers, social workers, lawyers, and policy makers, as they attempt to reach their collective dream.
